Dredge is a 3D Sunless Sea. It’s…mostly fine.

The Talos Principle II
Sequel to the original philosophical Portal-like The Talos Principle, Croteam has decided that “sequel” just means “bigger.” While this isn’t entirely wrong, there are times they take that ethos a bit too far. I’ll be up-front: The Talos Principle II gets a Tier Two – there are many moments it reaches into Tier One, but particularly when compared to the original it never quite stays there. Regardless, this is probably worth a look if you played the original and want “more” (though not necessarily “better”). Read more after the break, where I’ll keep any spoilers to a minimum.

I’ve sunk a weekend into Baldur’s Gate 3 now. This wasn’t something I initially planned on doing (for reasons detailed later), but a friend of mine generously gifted it to me to co-op over a free weekend. So I’m here to say: it’s fine. Not terrible, not terribly amazing. And if you like Divinity: Original Sin and Dungeons and Dragons Fifth Edition, you’ll probably like Baldur’s Gate 3.

I very much wanted to like this game. And I may go back eventually to try it out (I did – and added my thoughts at the end), but the aggressive tutorialization and cutscenes every ten seconds really got to me in my first half hour – to the point that I’m writing this instead of playing the game, which is never a good sign.
Control: Ultimate Edition
Control is a big-budget SCP Foundation game made by the same folks as Alan Wake, which you may have heard of because of its extensive use of raytracing. While it’s practically everything you would expect out of an SCP Foundation game and more, it does have some fairly significant niggles which prevent it from reaching the greatest heights.

Spiritfarer is in that category of games specifically designed to make you cry. While it is often successful at creating those situations, the gameplay portions quickly pile up to become chores, rather than cathartic or relaxing. Then it pulls an Ethan Carter. Spoiler below.

Assemble with Care
Assemble with Care is a game half about repairing items and half about someone meeting new people in a new city. Sadly, this one didn’t spark as much interest as I would have hoped.
Continue reading “Assemble with Care”Northern Journey
Northern Journey, as I understand it, was made by one Norwegian guy with no prior game development experience. You wouldn’t know that from playing it – sure, it’s rough around the edges in places, but the mood is well-crafted and the gameplay is quite engaging.
