Octodad: Dadliest Catch

Do you want all the fun parts of QWOP without the frustration? Why don’t you try…

Octodad is a simple game. Following suit with the wild craze of “reality physics simulators” it takes actions that should be mundane and simple but makes them wildly difficult by requiring the player to input each and every movement. Games like QWOP and then Surgeon Simulator bringing popularity to these titles, Octodad may be the best realization of this genre yet.

You are Octodad, an octopus who has somehow integrated himself into human society. Marrying the woman of your dreams and producing two completely normal looking children, it’s your job to navigate Octodad through his everyday life whilst not drawing too much attention to himself and exposing his crustaceous characteristics. Assuming you don’t fail, you’ll flail, flop and flounder through everyday tasks whilst no one seems to ever notice that you are, in fact, a walking octopus. Except for the evil chef but… he’s the only one.

Each joystick controls a different plane of movement for your right arm and the shoulder triggers allow you to move about in a rather clumsy if functional manner. Play with a friend and they can control the left arm. It’s one of those games where if you’re not knocking everything over, flipping tables upside down and making a huge mess, you’re probably doing it wrong. It’s along the same humor as Katamari Damacy–chaos is gold.

This really is one of the games where words don’t do it justice. I’m labeling it at Tier 1 and if you’re interested, you should just play it to find out more. It’s a silly stupid game that is fun to play and will make you laugh as you stumble drunkenly from one scene to the next. Can we really argue with a product that does that?
