Star Wolves

I’ve loved space games ever since Homeworld.  Unfortunately, Homeworld is pretty much the only good 3D RTS space game (I could never get into Nexus: The Jupiter Incident).  Don’t even try with Sins of a Solar Empire – if ships fly around in a plane, the game is space themed, not a space game.  Star Wolves is somewhat in the middle – there is no definite, flat play area, but the levels seem to be designed without thinking in three dimensions.  Homeworld had a bit of the same problem, so we’ll see if Star Wolves can hold up to the original 3D RTS in other ways.

Star Wolves

This game’s opening cutscene has not aged well.  I almost recommend starting the game just for the opening cutscene, though I’m not entirely convinced that it wasn’t just one guy doing different voices for all the characters.  And they all look a bit like monkeys.  Overall, it’s a bit like a more personal version of Homeworld.  You are captain of the Star Wolves, your own personal mercenary outfit.  There are good – even great – ideas here, but it’s held back by the technology of the time, limited budget, and a vaguely sexist outlook on life.  I can see myself playing it eventually if I get bored of Homeworld, but for now it must go into Tier Two.

Star Wolves 2

It looks like this is a continuation of the previous game, built into the same engine.  At least the voice acting is slightly less horrible – though everyone now talks like a bored President Obama or perhaps a monotone Captain Kirk.  As such, I put it into the same Tier – worth a shot if I get bored, though the camera control is really starting to annoy me.

Star Wolves 3: Civil War

Same thing, different campaign.  These games should probably be treated as a single three-part game, rather than a trilogy.
