Stone Story RPG

I find myself unsure. On the one hand, this is a fun little RPG with an interesting twist: you don’t directly control your character, only their equipment. You venture forward and defeat enemies, equipping and unequipping things as you go to give yourself the greatest advantage or solve puzzles. On the other hand, the game has taken influence from idle games. On the third hand, it has a built in scripting language so you can automate yourself away. Whether that’s a positive or negative, I’m not sure.

Oh also, it’s entirely made out of ASCII art, but you probably figured that one out.

At first, this game was pretty cool. You have been turned to stone and the world has been plunged into darkness. You awaken from the magic of a rune which gives you mysterious power, and are soon setting off to find the other eight to bring light into the world again. For the first 20 minutes or so, it’s a forward march toward adventure. The soundtrack is wonderful and the ASCII art is both unique and beautiful.

Unfortunately, as I mentioned above, Stone Story RPG takes influence from idle games. It’s certainly not a full-on idler, but the tasks soon become grinds. This is sad, since the game has quite a bit of charm, an unusual mechanical twist, and an interesting story. To make this less awful, the game does provide you with a scripting language and a rune which makes areas loop infinitely. Theoretically, you can grind indefinitely without paying attention after writing a script to do it for you – which, admittedly, is an attractive proposition and requires some effort, as opposed to typical idle games.

This is why I say I’m unsure – the story, mechanics, and graphics compel me forward, but the idle influence makes me draw back like a vampire from a cross (even though efforts have been taken to lessen the impact of the insidious nature of idle games). Sadly, I think I must put this into Tier Two for now – perhaps some day I will let the game run for a day without me and come back then.
