Baba Is You

Have I simply grown bored of puzzle games? Or is it that I value puzzle games less because I played so many for free (in Flash)?

Baba Is You, by all accounts, is a pretty ingenious game. You manipulate Baba (whom I assume is an electric sheep) at first, pushing blocks around to form rules for the game. Above, we have the rules “Flag Is Win”, “Baba Is You”, “Rock Is Push”, and “Skull Is Defeat”. If a rule is strung together, it is active. If not, it is not. This leads to a variety of fascinating situations where you might control Baba, a rock, or even the stage itself. Each stage is challenging and unique (as far as I played in my hour).

So why Tier Three? I suppose there are three reasons. First, I have played far too many Flash games and recognize the style of an initially simple but ever more complex puzzle game – and I’ve played far too many of them. While this game has hints of Zach-like mechanics, the experience around it just isn’t tempting enough to continue. Second, this game cost $15. While it likely deserves that, the value proposition of Flash games has driven the worth of puzzle games in my mind to practically 0.

Those are the serious complaints. My last complaint is more a personal peeve endemic to indie games and simply pushed my opinion over the edge. The controls are all presented (initially) for a controller. I don’t know why this is so frequently the case and I don’t know what game engines suggest it, but it shows a lack of thought put into the UI/UX. Baba Is You fares slightly better than most as the pause screen does have keyboard controls displayed, but coming from brilliantly designed control schemes to ones where they either don’t know or don’t care what input device I’m using is jarring. While Flash games often just threw a graphic with a mess of buttons at you, there were also truly great ones that taught you the controls either intuitively or through gameplay.
