Infra

This is quite possibly the only game I’ve played that starts you out sitting through a meeting and going through a PowerPoint. I honestly could not tell you if it was meant to be serious or not; it seems to be since it is the introduction to the game and meant to set the stage for a banal start, but it’s just so ridiculous I can’t be sure.

In Infra, you’re sent out to survey wear and tear on an old series of power generation plants, armed with a camera and a flashlight. Amusingly, I was reminded of Old Gods Rising while playing – though not in a bad way (other than having to remember that game). In that review, I had mentioned that having a huge, interconnected and explorable setting would be a great selling point – which is exactly what Infra seems to be doing.

It’s actually fairly entertaining for a walking simulator, partly because I enjoy exploring old ruins. I have fond memories of walking around Fort Flagler and Fort Worden – both during field trips and while geocaching.

That being said, I believe I need to put this into Tier Two for two reasons: first, I don’t really need another walking simulator in my life. Second, there is something about certain Unreal Engine games that make me nauseous. It hit me the worst in The Witness – I can’t even play half an hour of it without needing a serious break – but it was definitely affecting me here as well. I have no idea what it could be, especially I’ve never had the problem in the Source Engine, Cryengine, or any number of others (low FOV and motion blur or not). No matter how good your game is, if playing it makes me sick I will probably stick to other games.
